Do you know what feast of Pentecost is? For Christians it is an anniversary of an event that took place 50 days after Easter.

What is so important that happened that day in Jerusalem, in Israel over 2000 years ago?

You know that Jesus came to the Earth to save us, for us to be purified of our sins by the blood which he shed on the cross if we genuinely ask God for forgiveness.

You know that Jesus didn’t stay dead, even though they put him in a tomb.

You know that Jesus was risen from the dead and showed himself to his friends, he even ate with them!

They were still sad for Jesus was really going to leave them.

And Jesus went back to Heaven to prepare a place for us beside him. His mission on earth was accomplished.

But Jesus had told them that he would not leave them alone, that he wold send them the Holy Spirit and that they would be his witnesses in Jerusalem to the ends of the Earth.

Jesus’ friends were thus together in a large room, waiting for what Jesus had promised them. All at once a noise came from heaven like a strong wind and it filled the whole house where they were seated.

Tongues of fire appeared and settled on the heads of each of them, without burning anyone of course.

They were filled with the Holy Spirit and they started to speak in other languages that they had never spoken before as the Holy Spirit gave them to express themselves.

That day, Pentecost, lots of people from different countries were in Jerusalem.

Because of the noise, the people gathered and they were so surprised that they asked each other, “Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language?”

And so the apostle Peter spoke to the crowd saying that what they witnessed today had been announced by God a long time ago:
“In the last days I will pour out my Spirit on my servants, I will fill them with my Spirit…”

Then Peter spoke about Jesus.

In hearing him, lots of people were touched in their heart.

And that day, around 3,000 people accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour, acknowledging that he is the only Son of God. That was the first church!

The feast of Pentecost is truly an amazing anniversary, as the anniversary when the Holy Spirit was given to all those who made up the church.
